  Allamanda Quilters Special Notices

Minutes, March 9, 2010 Meeting
The meeting was called to order by the President, Paula Mooney, at 12:55 p.m.

Secretary's Report - We dispensed with the reading of the minutes from the February 9th meeting since they had previously been sent to everyone via email.

Treasurer's Report - Cathy Barlow read the treasurer's report that was submitted by Janice Tingle, Treasurer.  The checking account balance on February 9th was $260.  Income during the month included $555 for dues, $250 grant from Quilting Guild of The Villages (QGOTV), and $22 from the 50/50 drawing on March 3, 2010.  Deposits to the checking account totaled $827.  Janice is still holding one $15 check made payable to "Allamanda Quilters."  Expenses were $8.37 for 50/50 drawing supplies and $445 to QGOTV for their portion of the dues.  Dues have been paid for 77 members.  Total expenses were $453.37.  Checking account balance on March 9th is $633.63.

Janice will maintain a separate list of expenses against the $250 grant provided by the QGOTV.  We need to track the type of education for which these funds are used.

Membership Committee - Pat Smith indicated we currently have 77 members.  Based on a previous vote, we are capping our membership at 80.  If you have any friends who would like to join our group and quilt in the afternoons, please encourage them to call Pat and sign up.  While there will be another new chapter opening at Seabreeze, they will be quilting on Tuesday mornings, similar to most of the other chapters.

Program Committee - Sharon Musch, provided an overview of the information that was previously sent out via email regarding classes being offered through the Guild.  Since residents are not permitted to receive payment for workshops offered at any recreation center, the Guild has arranged for an off-site location to hold workshops and classes.  Students will be charged $15 for classes.  The facility will accommodate 30 people at tables (similar to our set up) or 60 people for a lecture style class.  If you would like to teach a class, you must first present your idea to the Guild's Program Committee, which meets on the 4th Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Laurel Manor.  If your idea is approved, you will need to provide a materials list, example, and instruction information.  This information will then be shared with all the chapters, and registration will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.  Once you hear about a class, either through email or at our meetings, you are encouraged to sign up ASAP if you're interested due to the limited number of openings for each class.  The contact for registering is Christie Aerni at caerni@yahoo.com or 750-0586 (home number).  If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

2011 Showcase of Quilts - Janice Bartus, our representative, shared some information she has learned in recent meetings.  Note:  The Showcase of Quilts will be held January 28-29, 2011.
Silent Auction - If you plan to donate items to the silent auction, you need to sign up on the sheet that Janice has by April 6th.  Your items would need to be delivered sometime in November, as preparations pick up for the Showcase.  Any items left after the Showcase is over will be donated to Ye Olde Thrift Shop.
Boutique Guidelines - The list of allowable items, as well as those that are not permitted to be in the boutique, is attached to this email.  If you plan to put something in the boutique, please review these guidelines. [ Boutique Guidelines ]
Charities - Money from the Showcase is donated to 2 charities selected by the Guild, based on suggestions from each chapter.  Our chapter needs to select a charity so that Janice can submit it at the Guild Board meeting on March 16.
Challenge Quilt - Janice has guidelines for the challenge quilt for those who still might be interested.  You will be given a piece of fabric that needs to be included in your quilt that fits the theme of "Village Sunset."  The cost is $5 (which is returned to you when you submit your finished item).  The last day to enter the challenge is April 6th.  Please contact Janice if you are interested.  jbveggie@comcast.net  or  313-623-5195
Judging/Checking In & Out - The judging of quilts will take place on January 13 and 14.  Volunteers will be needed to drop quilts off to the judges between 7:00-7:30 a.m. on January 13.  These quilts will need to be picked up later that day between 6:00-7:00 p.m.  Quilts will also need to be dropped off for judging on January 14 from 8:00-9:00 a.m. with a pickup time between 6:00-7:00 p.m.  Our chapter will be assisting the Friendship Star chapter with this job.  Janice will be looking for volunteers to sign up sometime in November so that she can turn the names in by December 1, 2010.
Crystal Light Containers - Janice is still in need of the Crystal Light tubes.  If you have some you can donate, please bring them to a meeting and give them to Janice.

Old Business:

1.    The shared items we use at each meeting (cutting mats, small ironing board, irons, etc.) are to be stored in the large green tub.  Irons need to be unplugged around 2:30 p.m. so that they will be cool enough for storage by the end of the meeting.  Heather Farnell mentioned that she plans to buy a new ironing board and will donate her old one to the group.  Thanks, Heather!

New Business:

1.    Quilt Retreat - Jo Loder indicated that 10 people were signed up for the retreat that is scheduled for April 13-15, beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday and running through lunch on Thursday.  She encourages any of you who are still interested to contact her or Heather.  (Jo - billjoloder@comcast.net  or  703-403-9960;  Heather - heatherfarnell@yahoo.com  or  352-561-4425)  It is a great time to work on unfinished objects (UFOs) and play with fabric!  The facility will prepare meals for us, and all we have to do for 2 whole days is have fun!  The cost is $140 for double occupancy, $184 for single, and this includes your meals, a sleeping room and the sewing room!  For those who have paid their deposit of $50, please give your final payment of $90 to Heather Farnell at the next meeting, or mail it to Jo Loder, 406 Aldama Ave., The Villages, FL  32159.  The balance is due March 16 so that we have a final count to give the center.  Hope to see you there!  (Jo and Heather will hold an informational meeting on March 23 for all those who have made final payment.  They'll have handouts and important information regarding the retreat for all those who are going.)

2.    Block of The Month (BOM) - During the meeting, we mentioned that Micki MacCumbee would be working on a BOM project with beginning (and experienced) quilters beginning next week.  However, there has been a slight change in the schedule.  We have several members who are taking the 6-week beginning quilting class at Quilter's Dream in Leesburg.  The class runs from 10:00-Noon on Tuesdays, so they will be running late to our meetings for the next few weeks.  So that they don't miss this opportunity, and so they're not overwhelmed by this instruction in addition to their class, Micki will plan to start the BOM sessions on April 20th (third Tuesday).  In the meantime, Micki has volunteered to work with the students taking the class at Quilter's Dream if they have questions or need to review anything they're learning.  When she starts the BOM project in April, it will be a 12-block quilt with horizontal and vertical sashings, 2 borders, and binding, all with useful techniques.  The blocks will be classical blocks, i.e., churn dash, sawtooth star, drunkard's path, etc.  Once the top is finished, Micki will work with you to join the top with batting and backing and also learn different quilting techniques (stitch-in-the-ditch, echo, etc.).  Sounds like something fun to look forward to each and every month!  If you have questions, please contact Micki at maccumbee313@comcast.net  or  352-350-6853.

3.    Chapter Web Site - Marilyn Paluszak, our "web mistress," provided an overview of where you can go to look at the photos she's been taking.  Our chapter has a link on the QGOTV web site, which is www.quiltingguildofthevillages.org .  We are somewhat limited in what goes on this site, and to see the name of people who shared during show-and-tell, you need to actually click on the picture.  Marilyn has offered us another option as well.  If you go to www.myvillageclub.com and click on the Allamanda Quilters link, you will see the names of the people who shared during show-and-tell, as well as the name of their item, right with the picture.  If you would like to see a larger image, just click on the picture.  Marilyn runs this site and has much more flexibility with regard to content and how often it is updated.

4.    Just a reminder to all members - Remember to show your membership card when shopping at Joanne's to receive a discount on your purchase!  Yea!

5.    Several members brought items for show-and-tell, and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the beautiful items and the creativity of our members!

The meeting was adjourned at 1:57 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Cathy Barlow
