Allamanda Quilters Special Notices
Minutes, May 11, 2010 Meeting
The meeting was called to order by the Secretary, Cathy Barlow, at 1:00 p.m.
Secretary’s Report – We dispensed with the reading of the minutes from the April 13th meeting since they had previously been sent to everyone via email.
Treasurer’s Report – Janice Tingle read the treasurer’s report. The checking account balance on March 9th was $820.46. Receipts during the month totaled $73. Expenses for the month totaled $149.38, which included $42 for dues to National Quilting Association, $27.92 reimbursement to Jo Loder for club supplies, $64.46 to Heather Farnell for reimbursement of Quilt Retreat expenses, and $15 to Ella Moore as a refund of dues. The ending balance on May 11 is $744.08.
Membership Committee – We had one new member join today, so we currently have 80 members and are at full capacity for our chapter.
Program Committee – There was no committee report at today’s meeting, but please see program and class information and opportunities below in the New Business section.
2011 Showcase of Quilts – (January 28-29, 2011) Donation quilt tickets are available for pick-up from Janice Tingle. Five dollars of your membership dues was for the purchase of these tickets, which is required by the Guild. You may write your own name on the tickets and place them in the container for the quilt you would like to win at the Showcase, or you may offer the opportunity to win the quilt to someone else and get your $5 back.
Boutique – Members should be thinking of unique items that can be made and sold at the boutique. This will be a great opportunity for us to make some things as a group and earn some money for our chapter’s treasury. Later in the fall, we’ll hold some “boutique days” where those who are interested can participate in making items to be sold on behalf of the chapter. We’d love to have some interesting new items that haven’t been sold at the boutique in the past. But… remember to keep these great ideas under your hat! Good ideas to make money spread like wildfire, and we want our chapter to make as much money as we can at the boutique!
Old Business:
1. The June 1st Guild meeting at Laural Manor (7:00 p.m.) will be a pot luck dinner. There is no formal program, and the time will be used for new members to meet and greet with those who have been members of the Guild for many years. Additional information regarding the pot luck will be available after the Guild’s Board meeting and will be sent in one of the weekly email updates.
2. Our chapter’s next Retreat will be held February 15-17 at the Life Enrichment Center. Registration forms are available at the welcome table upon entering the room, or you can
print one from the earlier emails that were sent out. This is a great opportunity to get some sewing done and get to know your fellow quilters at the same time! The room only comfortably holds a limited number, and I believe 9 people have already registered. Don’t hesitate if you’re interested! At the last retreat, we had a short workshop, gift exchange, door prize drawing, and videos. This one will be even better! Don’t hesitate… it would be a shame to miss out on this fun event!
3. Please remember to save your scraps of fabric as you sew. Any size is acceptable. We’ll share project ideas with you later in the fall!
New Business:
1. Class Opportunities –
a. Micki’s Jump Start quilt class meets again next Tuesday. She sent an email out yesterday with the cutting requirements for this week’s blocks. If you are participating and haven’t received that email, please contact Micki ASAP. Maccumbee313@comcast.net or 350-6853
b. On June 1st, Dale Angione will be teaching a “snippets” class for Guild members at the Methodist church. It is a technique where you cut fabric into small pieces (snippets) and then glue them back together to create a design, such as a flower. The example Dale displayed at the Guild meeting was of a wall hanging with a large vase with flowers made using the snippet method. She recreated the actual flowers in the border of the wall hanging using the snippet technique. If you’re interested in this class, please contact Jo Loder to register. billjoloder@comcast.net
c. Quilting Sisters in Leesburg is hosting Nancy Chong of Pacific Rim Quilting (www.prqc.com) for 2 classes in November. On November 17, Nancy will teach Hawaiian Quilting. The cost is $35, and lunch is included. On November 18, Nancy will give a trunk show and then teach a half-day class on Celtic Knot. The cost is $25, and you would need to bring your own lunch. This class is a great opportunity to learn how to easily make bias binding for all those beautiful appliqué patterns. Registration is currently open for members of the Quilting Sisters guild, but if they don’t fill all the open spaces, they will open it up to our chapter beginning June 11. Open spots will be offered to other Villages chapters by the 15th, so if you’re interested in an opening (should one exist), please contact Paula so that once she knows how many open spots there are, she can contact you and arrange for payment. plmooney@aol.com
d. Paula is willing to arrange for Joan Shay to teach her butterfly “Petal Play” class next fall or winter to our chapter if there is enough interest. The cost would probably be around $25. Joan presented her petal play quilts using the heat ‘n bond technique at a recent Guild meeting. The results are stunning, and this would be a great opportunity for us. If you haven’t already done so, please contact Paula if you are interested. plmooney@aol.com
2. Just a reminder to all members – Remember to show your membership card when shopping at Joanne’s to receive a discount on your purchase! Yea!
3. Seven members brought items for show-and-tell, and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the beautiful items and the creativity of our members!
The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Cathy Barlow
