  Allamanda Quilters Special Notices

Minutes, October 12, 2010 Meeting
The meeting was called to order by the President, Paula Mooney, at 1:00 p.m.

Secretary's Report - We dispensed with the reading of the minutes since they were previously distributed to the members via email. A printed copy of the minutes is available for review at each meeting if anyone is interested.

Treasurer's Report - Janice Tingle wasn't able to attend the meeting, but she provided a copy of the treasurer's report. The checking account balance on September 14th was $1,519.41. Receipts during the month totaled $77.50, and expenses for the month totaled $10.00. The ending balance on October 12th is $1,586.91.

Membership Committee - We had a member notify us that she was unable to continue participating in our club. Her name has been removed from the roster and email distribution list.

Program Committee - Sharon reminded members of the email she sent recently that lists the class offerings through the Guild. Class descriptions and supply lists for classes are posted on our bulletin board on the welcome table. The Guild expects the Nancy Chong's Celtic appliqué class to fill up quickly, so they have set aside two spots for each chapter. If anyone is interested in attending this class, they should contact Sharon Musch as soon as possible. Sharon will put all names in a hat and draw the names of the people who will be able to attend.

2011 Showcase of Quilts - (January 28-29, 2011)
Janice Tingle will be away for a couple of weeks, but when she returns she will have the donation quilt tickets that have not yet been distributed. The cost of the tickets was included in your annual dues, so you have already paid for them. Please see Janice at a future meeting if you haven't picked them up from her.
A second "block carrier" workshop will be planned, and information will be distributed at a later time. Many block carriers have already been completed and submitted. If you still have the mailing tube at home, you are encouraged to complete this project and bring in the carrier to Paula Mooney.
A total of 23 quilts have been entered in the Showcase from Allamanda Quilters. Four of the entries are Challenge Quilts. The $5 deposit that challenge quilt participants paid to participate will be returned to them at the January 4, 2011 Guild meeting. All Challenge Quilts will be kept and returned to members at the end of Showcase 2011 on January 29, 2011.
Silent Auction - Each chapter is required to donate 1 item for every 10 members. In our case, that means we need to submit 8 items for the auction. B.J. Herter has been collecting these items, and we now have all 8! Thanks ladies! Any other items you come
up with could be included in the Boutique, where our chapter could earn funds for the treasury.
Our chapter's responsibility at Showcase 2011 is to partner with the Friendship Star chapter to check-in and check-out quilts. Volunteers are needed all day for the judging days of January 13-14 at Lauren Manor. Volunteers are also needed to check-in quilts for Showcase 2011 at Savannah Center on January 27 from 7-10 a.m. and check-out the quilts at the end of Showcase 2011 on January 29 from 4-6 p.m. Jan Bartus will have more information regarding exact responsibilities and how things work at a future meeting. She will also have a volunteer sign-up sheet at next week's meeting (October 19). The more members we have who are willing to volunteer, the less the burden will be on us all! The Showcase is only possible through all the volunteer efforts of Guild members, and we actually are fortunate that our responsibilities are only for a few days in January. Many other chapters have been working for almost 2 years on their responsibilities!
The Guild is also looking for an additional 16-20 people to volunteer to serve in a group of 4-5 people to hang and take down quilts. Each group would need a couple of 6 foot ladders for this job. Please consider volunteering for our chapter's responsibilities (see paragraph above) before volunteering for this duty.
Antique quilts - Details to come later.
Admission to Showcase 2011 is free to Guild members who have paid their 2011 dues by November 30, 2010. The membership card you receive after paying your dues is what you will need to show in order to be admitted to the quilt show in January. (Please refer to additional information related to our chapter's dues under New Business.) With the payment of your 2011 dues you will also receive another 6 tickets for the donation quilt!
Please watch your weekly email updates and business meeting minutes for more information on this subject.

Old Business:
1.    Quilt Retreat - February 15-17, 2011 - Registration forms are available at the welcome table at each meeting. Please see Jo Loder if you have questions or are interested in signing up!
2.    November 2nd Shop "Stop" - Carol Fox has been coordinating this event. We currently have 12 ladies who have expressed interest in joining the group. The plan is to spend the day at The Quilt Shop of Deland, breaking mid-day for lunch as a group. Deland is a quaint little town with many interesting shops, so even if you finish your quilt related shopping (but, really, is that EVER done!), there's plenty to do. Please contact Carol directly if you are interested in participating. Her email is pfox2162@comcast.net. The cost is $5 per person. A driver does not have to pay to participate, and they will receive an additional $5 to cover the cost of gas.
3.    Wanda Pierce and Carol Fox shared techniques related to making chenille potholders at a recent meeting. These would make great boutique items to earn money for the chapter! Jo Loder is scheduled to hold a label workshop at the October 26th meeting. Paula will be scheduling our second set of workshops to make additional block carriers as well! What a busy group!

New Business:
1.    Guild Officer Nominations - Micki MacCumbee accepted the nomination for the Secretary position for the Guild. Way to go, Micki!
2.    Allamanda Quilters Officer Nominations for 2011-2012 - The nominating committee submitted Sharon Musch as the VP nominee and Cathy Barlow as the Secretary nominee. Paula asked if there were any nominations from the floor, and there were none. Our election will be held at the November 9th business meeting.
3.    Barb Dunn initiated a discussion regarding the dues for 2011 for Allamanda Quilters. Our dues for 2010 were $15, and it was suggested that we increase the dues to $20 for 2011. By doing this, we would be able to retain $10 of the dues in our chapter's treasury after sending $10 to the Guild ($5 for Guild membership and $5 for donation quilt tickets). After a brief discussion, Barb moved that we increase Allamanda Quilters dues to $20 for 2011. Carolyn Page seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously carried. (A quorum was required for this vote, and we had 22 members at the meeting.) Dues should be paid to Janice Tingle by check (made payable to Allamanda Quilters) by November 30. This date is important! You will need your new 2011 membership card in order to be admitted to Showcase 2011 in January!
4.    Paula will be working on arranging a Stack-and-Whack class with Dale Angione for early in 2011. This will most likely take at least 2 meetings. Dale would meet with us to discuss how to pick out an appropriate fabric for the class and how to determine the measurement of the pattern in the first meeting. In the second meeting, we would learn how to cut, stack, and whack the fabric to make a quilt! The cost for this class is yet to be determined, but look for information in future emails!
5.    Quilting Sisters LaTiDa Luncheon - February 12, 2011 -The luncheon will be held at La Hacienda, and in addition to the luncheon, there is a fashion show that includes items from Coldwater Creek as well as fashions sewn by members of the guild. There will also be a boutique, Chinese auction (baskets), and a silent auction. Ticket price is $25.00, and this event usually sells out early. Tickets for this wonderful event go on sale December 3rd. Tables are already being formed by people who have attended in the past. If you are interested in attending and sitting with a group from Allamanda Quilters, please contact Cathy Barlow (cathybarlow56@yahoo.com) as soon as possible. Don't hesitate… it would be great to have a table of Allamanda ladies there!

Announcements:
1.    Barb Dunn and Carolyn Page shared their recent experience with the Orlando area shop hop. They visited 9 shops in 2 days and especially liked the Sewing Studio in Maitland and the Bernina shop in Lake Mary.

Several beautiful items were shared with the group during the show-and-tell time. Check out the pictures when they're up on our website! We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the creativity of our members!

The meeting was adjourned at 2:07 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Cathy Barlow
